Back in the 1960s and 1970s,

the Oro Rosso (Red Gold) tiles

of Sassuolo were initially used as

sturdy flooring for wine cellars,

Parmesan factories and balsamic

vinegar cellars. Soon, demand

worldwide for these pure clay

tiles was such that a ‘red goldrush’

made Sassuolo’s name. Now this

material, renowned for looking

better and better as time

goes by, is rediscovered. It is

perfect for terraces, courtyard,

pathways, and general flooring.

Today’s Oro Rosso has

two formats: 100x115mm

hexagon or 75x150mm bricks.

Floors are sealed with modern

chemical agents or in the

traditional way, using linseed

oil and beeswax.
